Deciding Students
Whether a student is entering Mount Union without having decided on a major or future career path or a current student is considering changing their major, we can help! Schedule an appointment with a staff member in the Center for Student Success to begin a series of coaching meetings during which a student will be able to take several assessments as well as work through the Career Construction Interview process.
In the course of this work, a student will make a valuable relationship with our support staff who will help them through this process an on into the major that is the best fit for them. We can serve as a resource until a student obtains an advisor in their major and beyond!
Sophomore Initiatives
Students returning for their second year at Mount Union are very important to us! Much like our first-year students, those returning for their second year continue to work to make connections on campus and access the resources that can be vital to success as they find their homes in their major and with their connections with faculty and staff on campus.
To support this continued connection for second year students, we have a Sophomore Series launching, which will provide workshops and programs specifically for second-year students. One such program is the Halfway There Fair, typically toward the end of the spring semester. This program brings campus office and resources together in one convenient space so that students moving into the second half of their educational career at Mount Union can find, talk to, and receive support from any area they have need. Offices involved in this program include Career Development, the Center for Student Success, the Registrar, the Regula Center, Student Involvement and Leadership and more. In addition to these offices, we highlight the Integrative Core office, who joins this event to provide final details for students who are submitting the WOC portfolio at the end of their second year. Stay tuned for the details and date for this year’s event!
Ellucian Advise
Ellucian Advise allows for a clear collaborative effort among faculty, advisors, administrators, and staff, engaging us all in the active process of supporting student success and retention.
While it certainly does not replace individual outreach or face-to-face conversations with students, this new technology platform does promote important interactions and provide the space for quick and simple notification of advisors or Center for Student Success staff when there is a concern about a student. This enables these support providers to reach out in a timely and effective way, leading to more efficient student support services and increased student success.
Ultimately, Ellucian Advise supports the retention efforts at the University of Mount Union by providing an intentional, efficient method of sharing critical information across divisions, tracking students about whom there are concerns, and providing impactful outreach and support services.
TRAINING AND RESOURCES
Students will learn about Starfish during Preview and Orientation. This will be further reinforced through Exceptional Beginnings.
Faculty, administrators, and staff will get brief training during new faculty and new staff orientation. They will also have the opportunity to attend additional training sessions throughout the year.
Additional resources for both students and faculty, administrators, and staff can be accessed by the Starfish FAQs.
